Using Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) For Water Treatment

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is used to adsorb natural organic compounds and synthetic organic chemicals from contaminated water. Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is a good absorption medium because of its high surface area to volume ratio. One gram of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) has a surface area equivalent to 1,000 square meters.

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Treatment generally consists of two tanks in series with Granular Activated Carbon. Water can be directed in an up or down flow configuration depending on your application. As the contamination flows through the activated carbon, the contaminants are adsorbed from the water.

The Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is replaced when breakthrough occurs and requires a carbon change out service. A Carbon Change out service consists of the carbon being vacuumed out of the Carbon Vessel and new Granular Activated Carbon being put into the vessel.

Depending on the site, after treatment the water is discharged into a local storm drain, stream, re-injection into on site wells or in some cases, the water is used for on-site dust control.
