California’s Groundwater

California’s Groundwater

Every single day we all use copious amounts of water whether it is for our bodies or our everyday use. So where does that water come from? Of the 38 million people that reside in California, most of them get their drinking water from a public source. We can’t just take water straight from the source and allow people to drink it. The immense supply of water is taken from each source and then treated to make it safe for drinking. Approximately 2 million California residents receive their drinking water from an estimated number of 250,000-600,000 private wells that are spread throughout the state. Each private domestic owner of a water well manages each well on their own. Therefore, the quality of water can be different in many places.

Since California’s climate is dry and contains little rain, our water supply is more reliant on groundwater. Therefore we should be more concerned about the quality and how it is treated. Below shows a diagram of how groundwater is collected and retrieved.
