Groundwater is a very important water resource for many people in the United States, with over 50% of the population depending on groundwater for drinking water. Unfortunately, groundwater is highly susceptible to contamination, and many of our aquifers are impacted with chemicals and pollution. This often results from poor agricultural practice with the overuse of pesticides and fertilizers. Industrial pollution often contains a wide range of contaminants, including pathogens; toxins and heavy metals that can migrate downward and lead to contaminated aquifers. Due to of the variable flow rates of groundwater compared with surface water (influenced by factors such as location, topography, hydrology and the sources of groundwater recharge), this may have important implications for how well contaminants at a contaminated site undergo treatment and remediation.

Pure Effect’s Groundwater Remediation Systems use the GAC (Granular Activated Carbon) treatment method, which is a method where Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is inside of a Liquid Phase Media Vessel , and as the water flows through the vessel, the contaminants in the water(also known as VOC’s) are adsorbed by the Activated Carbon . Some of the contaminants that are removed by Activated Carbon include; benzene, chlorobenzenes, trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, methylene chloride and vinyl chloride. Activated Carbon Filtration media can effectively reduce the organic chemical levels found in the groundwater.

A Groundwater Remediation System is typically composed of a settling tank, a submersible or transfer pump, a bag filter and liquid phase carbon vessels. The Groundwater is pumped out of the ground into a settling tank where it is then transferred through a submersible pump or a transfer pump to a mechanical bag filter to a Liquid Phase Carbon Vessel. As it passes through the Activated Carbon Filtration Media inside of the vessel, constituents are effectively removed. Once the water has gone through the treatment process the Groundwater is ready to be discharged under a site specific discharge permit for compliance.
